Accountability Remains Human: CAMFT’s Ethics Standards for Telehealth, Technology, and Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Presenter: Luke Martin, Esq., CAMFT Staff Attorney
Date: April 10, 2026
Time: 9am – 12 pm PST
Webinar Description:
This presentation walks through the approved updates to Section 6 of the CAMFT Code of Ethics, which addresses Telehealth, Technology, and Artificial Intelligence (AI). It explains what the changes mean in practice and how they guide therapists in responsibly using digital tools and AI across clinical work, supervision, documentation, practice management, education, and public-facing activities. The presentation also highlights how the revisions ensure that technological innovation does not diminish therapist accountability, reinforce the importance of professional judgment, and establish clear ethical guardrails for competence, informed consent, confidentiality, disclosures, and legal compliance. Collectively, these updates provide a forward-looking yet grounded ethical framework that supports responsible adoption of emerging technologies while safeguarding client welfare and the integrity of the profession.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Explain the purpose and scope of the approved revisions to Section 6 of the CAMFT Code of Ethics related to Telehealth, Technology, and Artificial Intelligence.
- Identify key ethical responsibilities for marriage and family therapists when using technology and AI, including competence, confidentiality, informed consent, disclosures, and accountability.
- Understand the ethical risks associated with technology and AI use in therapy, including confidentiality limitations, bias, and overreliance, and how the revised standards address those risks.
